Simultaneous Interpreting Sessions

Simultaneous Interpreting Sessions

On April 16, 2017, the ITS program gladly invited two professors from Nanjing Normal University to present to the second-year Chinese-English track students. Dr. Yan Wei, who is also the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at NC State University, talked about how CI at NC State promotes Chinese language and culture in the Triad area through “On and Off Campus Partnership”. The second speaker, Dr. Wenhua Qin, who is currently a visiting professor at WFU sponsored by the ITS program, gave a speech on environment protection in the U.S. during President Theodore Roosevelt’s time, a subject she has been interested in for years. The ITS second-year Chinese track students provided simultaneous interpreting for both speeches using portable interpreting equipment. They greatly impressed the guest speakers with their language proficiency and interpreting skills. Dr. Chaowei Zhu and Dr. Brett Rosenberg, members of the ITS faculty, were also present.

Background: According to the curriculum, Chinese-English track students focus on interpreting strategies in year two. ITS program holds a series of weekend speeches on a variety of topics to provide students with additional real-life interpreting opportunities and extra training hours to complement their internship work.
