Professions in Languages
Surprising discipline combinations make up the 21st century’s most promising career profiles. That was the central theme when on Friday, March 21st, invited experts and WF professors convened to discuss how languages combined with other disciplines can be the gateway to jobs in various industries: video games, finances, data analytics, healthcare and more.
Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Ola Furmanek, Director of the ITS program, who was then followed by Leandra Vernon from Wake Forest Baptist Health, who discussed what it means to be part of a team of medical interpreters and the socio-cultural challenges it presents.
Other panelist included Dr. Diego Burgos and Dr. Jerid Francom, who looked at how languages and localization technology have become an integral part of data analytics and the the information industry as a whole. Prof. Tamara Cabrera also hosted a video panel with quests from Spain and Columbia who shared their expertise on language and its importance in the video gaming industry and why financial translation is becoming big business.
